TORNA

The hi-fi graphic EQ, back on your desk, with an analyzer glowing in the middle. $12 · Standalone app, VST3 and AU on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel); standalone app and VST3 on Windows (64-bit)

Some mixes do not need surgery; they need a balance move. TORNA is a graphic equalizer modelled part by part from a 1983 service schematic: the input stage, the twelve resonators of each channel, the slide pots and the way they are wired, the output stage and its supply rails, and the analyzer’s filters and display. Its bands are broad and overlapping, as on the original, so a few sliders move the whole mix: a smile on the master, weight under the drums, a vocal brought forward. Twelve bands from 16 Hz to 32 kHz, ±12 dB, one bank for the left channel and one for the right, and a spectrum analyzer in the middle. Built for the mix bus and the master bus.

On the panel

Front

Both banks set, the analyzer reading the output, and the EQUALIZER GRAPHIC drawing the response of both channels as computed from the circuit: the left channel bright, the right one thinner.

Preset

The VOCAL PRESENCE factory preset, chosen with ◀ PRESET ▶ under the EQUALIZER GRAPHIC: it sets all 24 sliders, and they glide to their new places.

NOR/REV

NOR/REV pressed: the curve is reversed, every boost becomes the matching cut and back, and the REVERSE lamp lights.

EQ OUT

EQ IN/OUT pressed: the equalizer is out of the path, the red windows in the slider caps go dark and the graphic draws a flat line.

Rear plate

The REAR key turns the unit round. LINE LEVEL sets what full scale means in volts at the input (1, 2 or 4 V), which moves only where the output stage clips; CAP LIGHTS sets the red lights in the slider caps to ON, DIM or OFF.

Broad bands that work on each other

The twelve bands sit at 16, 32, 63, 125, 250 and 500 Hz and 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 kHz, ±12 dB at the slider ends. They are broad and overlapping, as on the circuit they come from, so a few sliders move the whole balance of a mix. LEFT and RIGHT are separate banks; LINK moves them together, COPY L ▸ R and R ▸ L copy one bank to the other, and FLAT returns every slider to 0 dB.

A spectrum analyzer and the true curve

In the middle sits a spectrum analyzer: twelve band columns, one per slider, and TOTAL for the whole signal. It reads the output or the input (ANALYZER OUT / IN), the left channel, the right or both, and LEVEL sets its sensitivity; it only draws and never changes the sound. Under it the EQUALIZER GRAPHIC draws the real response of both channels, computed from the circuit as you move a slider, with the moved slider’s value on its top line.

Presets and memories

The ◀ PRESET ▶ keys step through the factory presets: FLAT, MASTER SMILE, MASTER GENTLE, MIX BUS CLEAN, LOW END WEIGHT, VOCAL PRESENCE, DRUM BUS, AIR, LOUDNESS, BRIGHT HI-FI, WARM and RADIO. Hold ▶ for one second to save the 24 sliders as your own preset (USER 01, USER 02 …), listed after the factory ones in every project. MEMORY A, B and C keep three settings with the project: press to recall, hold to store. Double-click a slider to return it to the preset or memory loaded last, or to 0 dB.

The switches of the original

EQ IN/OUT takes the equalizer out of the path without a click. NOR/REV reverses the curve. ATT −6 dB is the input attenuator, for a hot bus that drives the output stage into its rails. INPUT and OUTPUT set the level before and after the equalizer, ±12 dB. POWER off passes the signal untouched.

The rear plate

The REAR key at the bottom turns the unit round to its rear plate. LINE LEVEL (1, 2 or 4 V at 0 dBFS, default 2 V) moves only the point where the output stage clips: +19, +13 or +7 dB above full scale. CAP LIGHTS sets the slider-cap lights to ON, DIM or OFF.

The controls

Latency 64 samples at every sample rate from 44.1 to 192 kHz, reported to the host. Standalone app, VST3 and AU on macOS; standalone app and VST3 on Windows.
